Everybody Knows The Captain Lied

President Barack Obama got the $825 (or $1.2 trillion over a decade) stimulus package through the House of Representatives but the 244 to 188 vote is a hollow victory indeed. Without a single Republican voting for the bill, his high-profile visit to Capitol Hill on Tuesday came to exactly naught - at least on the House side.

Obama vowed to change Washington and usher in a new post-partisan era. The mood music and optics were pitch perfect as he trekked up to the Hill. Republicans praised his gesture, welcomed his sincere demeanour and appreciated his willingness to listen.

Problem was, he wanted only to listen and did not want to act on what Republicans said. When he was asked if he would re-structure the package to include more tax cuts, he reportedly responded: "Feel free to whack me over the head because I probably will not compromise on that part."

He apparently added: "I understand that and I will watch you on Fox News and feel bad about myself." (Used with permission. Read Toby Harnden's full, unedited article at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/)

In his song, Everybody Knows , poet/singer/songwriter, Leonard Cohen, captures the present mood for America.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed

Everybody knows that the war is over

Everybody knows the good guys lost

Everybody knows the fight was fixed

The poor stay poor, the rich get rich

That's how it goes

Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking

Everybody knows that the captain lied

Everybody's got this broken feeling

Like their father or their dog just died...

***

The dice are loaded and the fight is fixed. Those who played by the rules will pay for those who lied and cheated. This is how the American Dream has turned into the American Nightmare.

And so, as I pen these thoughts, my heart is heavy for our children and their future. Where is their American Dream? Where is their hope? How can we honestly say we have unselfishly taken care of our children?

We haven't. Not one bit and Washington could care less.

What America needs, America doesn't want. We have placed our hope in all the wrong places therefore living out the consequences of trusting in man and not God.

The only hope for our America is God.

How much further must we fall before we "get it?"

One more plagiarized article by Judi Lynn Lake. It would be nice if Judi wrote something herself instead of copying email from her spam folder.

Hello, Justin -- Thanks for using my whole name; not many do. I don't plagiarize but if there are points to be made, I do cite others with credit. Perhaps many of us echo the same feelings on certain issues? Justin, I also don't pay much attention to spam as those are immediately deleted. It is interesting that there are few places on the internet where abrasive comments are given, thanks for reminding me.

Judy:  Interesting article.  From my perspective Obama did include what the Republicans suggested and they still voted "No" to help America out of this crisis.  It is sad that they couldn't put their own agenda's aside and help this country.  Regardless if you voted for Obama or not it is time to help him make the changes needed to turn this country around.  We are losing ground and quickly.  We really have to stop thinking in terms of us against them and see how we can work together.  Thanks for making that point, the Republicans are just not there yet.  Maybe when the ship is under water they will help to bail out.  Or not, perhaps sinking is what they really want.  Very sad indeed.  Judy thanks for pointing out that the Republicans all voted NO.   I think that will have a very big impact on the Party, and not the one they are hoping for.  I hope while they are in West Virginia this weekend celebrating they victory of doing nothing they enjoy this moment. It might be short lived.  Rachelle

Hi Rachelle, I am embarrassed to the fact that until this past November, like many, I have never really paid attention to politics unless it had to do with things I was personally affected by. Since I am a New Yorker, and was personally affected with 9-11, that memory will always remain with me, however, if I were to be honest, I wonder how different I'd be had I not been personally affected... I can't honestly say - I would hope the same; but don't know.

My present worries go for the future of our children and I believe both parties are to be blamed; it seems to me that only until recently have the Republicans firmly taken stands for our behalf; I believe we've been lied by all. No one really knows what the future holds for America right now, Rachelle, but our children should never have been in the position to inherit the problems that are being handed down to them -- where are their chances to live out the American Dream? Thanks for commenting.

Hi Judi, I hear your deep concens in these matters. Pulling for a President to do well does not require agreement on everything. Congress rushes into decisions without trying to anticipate unintended consequences. They are supposed to "check and balance" the White House, not rubberstamp it--whether Bush, Obama, or whomever. Good article.

Yes, Jane, I do have many concerns these days but mostly for our children and I don't believe any decisions being made are for their best interest -- have we become that selfish of a nation? Thanks for commenting and for discerning my intentions.
